Sex Addiction

Sex Addiction

Sex is not inherently addictive, but if you are avoiding your life problems or emotionally intimate relationships by engaging in compulsive sexual behaviours you may have a sexual addiction.

Sexual addiction is any sexually-related, compulsive behaviour which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on yourself, your family, friends, loved ones, or your work environment.

Sexual addiction has been called sexual dependency or sexual compulsivity in the past. It is a compulsive behaviour that completely dominates an individuals life. Sex becomes a priority more important than family, friends, and work.

Unmanageable sexual behaviours may include; compulsive masturbation, compulsive relationships, excessive pornography, prostitution, exhibitionism, voyeurism, indecent phone calls, incest, rape, and violence.

Sexual addiction follows the same progressive nature of other addictions. Sexual addicts struggle to control their behaviours, and experience despair over their constant failure to do so. Their loss of self-esteem grows, fueling the need to escape even further into their addictive behaviours. A sense of powerlessness pervades the lives of addicts.
